Bird
Like Andrea Arnold’s other movies, Bird has a thrilling, distinctive feral outlaw energy that embraces chaos, the fantastical and hard social truths. Fuelled by tracks from Sleaford Mods, Fontaines DC and Coldplay, we follow 12-year-old Bailey – played by phenomenal newcomer Nykiya Adams – growing up in a freewheeling, graffiti-daubed North Kent squat with a teenage half-brother who dabbles in violent vigilantism and her feckless, magnificently tattooed, drug-dealing dad, Bug (Barry Keoghan). Bailey is deeply troubled by her sense of not being valued as Bug plans to wed anew until she runs into enigmatic Bird (the highly charismatic Franz Rogowski). It’s hard to explain why this gritty, dark tale is a joy to watch, but it is. Strap in for a wild ride.
