The Conversation
In remembrance of the late great Gene Hackman, we bring you one of his most celebrated performances in Francis Ford Coppola’s neo-noir masterpiece. Hackman is Harry Caul, a San Francisco-based surveillance expert hired by a shadowy company director (Robert Duvall) to eavesdrop on a couple walking through Union Square. After much knob-twiddling and wire-tuning, he deciphers a clue that triggers his fear that he is being surveilled himself. As his imagination runs riot, his guilt for past mistakes force him to take a closer look. Walter Murch’s unforgettable soundscape lets Hackman shine in this deft portrayal of paranoia fuelled by guilt. A cautionary tale for today’s surveilled world.
