3 years on from the successes of director John Krasinski’s original, comes this rarest of films – an assured, genuinely scary sequel, here, once again, starring Krasinski’s wife, the ever-dependable Emily Blunt.
“PART II” segues smoothly on from the conclusion of the previous film, picking up the story of Blunt’s hardy character, widower & mother of two Evelyn, & her quest to navigate her family’s survival in a post-apocalyptic world inhabited by terrifying blind aliens, equipped with an acute sense of hearing. Cillian Murphy is a welcome addition to the cast, as the terrifying world of the original film is further expanded here, both to the characters on screen & the audience watching. The nerves continue to consistently jangle, as you find yourself holding your breath, silently willing the safe passage of Evelyn, Regan & Marcus through this utterly hostile environment.
AQPII keeps the human heart & message of family strength at the centre of its narrative, but the jumps & scares are plentiful and powerful – a perfect tightrope of a feature, expertly executed by Krasinski, with lots to enjoy.
