I’m Still Here -Ainda Estou Aqui
Sharp, poignant, rich in performance-driven excellence, Walter Salles' political biographical drama focuses on the troubling story of mother & politico activist Eunice Paiva (utterly bravura performance from Fernanda Torres, who arguably steals the entire film), and her struggles in coping with the forced disappearance of her husband, the dissident politician Rubens during the military dictatorship in Brazil. Insanely, soon after its release in Brazilian theaters by Sony, the film was the target of an unsuccessful boycott by the Brazilian far-right, who utterly denied that the regime was a dictatorship. Inflammatory stuff; meanwhile critics, audiences & film festival judging boards clambered over each other to heap praise on this most unique of works, with Torres absolutely festooned in plaudits for her breakout performance. Gripping, profoundly moving, a celebration of Brazil that mustn't be missed; undoubtedly one of the finest in the Global Class Of '24.
