Lola
Incredibly audacious, inventive & absorbing - LOLA twists & turns the usual time travel tropes on their head, with spectacularly mindblowing results. Director Andrew Legge shows off some seriously ambitious moves in his debut - an Irish black & white found-footage sci fi mockumentary (!!), that confounds expectation at every available opportunity. In a good way. As succinctly as possible, it is 1940. Two sisters - Thom and Mars (the effervescent Emma Appleton and Stefanie Martini), build a machine (the eponymous LOLA) that can intercept radio and TV from the future and use it to change history. What follows is a cautionary tale, innovatively told - and it packs quite a punch in its compact 79 minute runtime. Wonderful, old-fashioned cinema with big ideas.
