The Zone of Interest
Directed by Jonathan Glazer
When Jonathan Glazer’s astonishing historical drama picked up 2 Oscars recently, it was the culmination of a spectacular year for this deeply affective, intense work. Loosely based on the 2014 novel by Martin Amis, the film focuses on the life of Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss, and his wife Hedwig who live with their family in a home in the “Zone Of Interest”, next to the concentration camp. From the very outset, it feels like a landmark movie, dealing with unspeakably difficult ideas, with skill and bravery. It makes the viewer do a huge amount of the work, filling in the gaps amongst the mundanity of the family’s life. Restrained performances, perfectly pitched score, muted colour palettes all combine to deliver a most unforgettable, unsettling cinematic experience.
