This poignant and delicate story, focusing on an unearthed sibling relationship and personal conflicts, is given substantial emphasis by the attentive & beautiful direction of writer/director Cathy Brady in this, her terrific feature debut. An arresting Irish border drama that burns its way into the subconscious, Wildfire is sadly notable as the last performance of the remarkable acting talents of Nika McGuigan, who tragically died in 2019 from cancer. Her central role as Kelly is a stunningly realised depiction, nuanced and vibrant, and underpinned by equally strong supporting performances from the great Nora Jane-Noonan and Martin McCann.
Focussing unflinchingly on the torn relationship between the two sisters, Brady’s bittersweet tale about the bonds of sisterhood is tellingly set on the border between north and south, and the unmistakeable air of historic unrest & unease lingers just beneath the surface throughout. A visceral, and at times cathartic cinematic experience, convincingly delivered by a trio of powerhouse performances, from some of the country’s finest young talents.
