Any Roald Dahl film adaptation already has its work cut out, as the source material is so incredibly imaginative & visual. But director Paul King, who so successfully bought Paddington back into the public conscience with his 2 perfect films, has once again bottled lightning here, with this sumptuous, colourful musical, that thrills & delights from the very first taste. Timothee Chalamet dons the top hat & velvet trenchcoat with great aplomb, and alongside a dazzling cast, delivers a sweet, warmly old-fashioned fable, studded with sugary song & dance numbers, and an abundance of characters Dahl would have adored. The quest to open Wonka’s very first shop is the story, but plot is lower on the list here - Confection perfection - you’ll love it!
