The Red Balloon
The premise is simplicity itself - the tale of a boy and his toy. Yet this 1956 mini masterpiece has resonated deeply with film lovers & critics everywhere on multiple levels.
Directed by Albert Lamorisse, it is the only short film to win an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, and also won the Short Film Palme d’Or at the '56 Cannes Film Festival. Whilst on the surface the dialogue-free fable of Pascal and his new friend - a red balloon with a mind of its own - is a very straightforward study of childhood, friendship, innocence, love & loss, it is a small work of utter perfection.
