The Red Balloon

Directed by Albert Lamorisse, it is the only short film to win an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, and also won the Short Film Palme d’Or at the '56 Cannes Film Festival. Whilst on the surface the dialogue-free fable of Pascal and his new friend - a red balloon with a mind of its own - is a very straightforward study of childhood, friendship, innocence, love & loss, it is a small work of utter perfection.
